Susan is a Research Associate at Mind the Gap. She is an environmental scientist with a BSc from Kisii University and an MA from Egerton University, Kenya. She is also a teacher of Swahili and Luhya. Since 2023 Susan has served as a trustee with the Machars and Cree Valley Climate Action Network (Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland). Her main work areas are:
- Practical and policy support to address sexual and gender-based violence
- Gendered aspects of conflict management and peace building
- Gender, natural resources management and environment
- Cross cultural communications and language
Susan’s research and practical work is currently focussed on three projects:
- Gendered aspects of environmental justice: The social, psychological and environmental issues facing disadvantaged women and girls who subsist by scavenging a livelihood on municipal dumpsites. These people face formidable challenges, including pervasive sexual and physical violence alongside harmful environmental pollution.
- Climate action, soil health and sustainable agriculture:Susan is supporting “climate conversations” – a dialogue between farmers in Likia community in Kenya’s Rift Valley and communities in SW Scotland.
- Peace and conflict resolution in relation to water management: Working alongside colleagues from Egerton University and Oslo New University College on the Rongai and Molo river catchment areas.
